Hippies and beatniks circa 1966 -- a couple of questions about them?

Please try to address each question seperately. First, were there "hippies" yet in 1966? Were there still "beatniks"? What did your stereotypical beatnik wear? I'm writing a story about a man in 1966 who encounters some bohemian types.
