Does anyone know how and why divorce was develped?

I heard years ago divorce was handled by the churches. And because of a backlog, the courts began handling the divorce proceedings. I also heard divorce laws were developed because of certain people leaving the families with no financial support given to the children and wife. Can anyone elaborate more on this history?
