Can boat prop nut be too tight?

I recently purchased a boat for the first time. The motor is a 1964 Merc60 6 hp. I removed the prop to see if there is a shear pin and buy a spare. When putting the prop back on, I tightened the prop as much as I could. Is this correct? Can overtightening hurt anything?
